since last time the wikimedia.ch supported project “wikimedia mali” made quite some progress in collecting free information on mali, west africa.

• renaud and collegues from kunnafoni located in bamako, mali’s capital city, managed to extend the dictionary songhai - french to around 3000 words.
• christian wagner from openstreetmap helped to digitize a first map of bamako, and with it fill in a formerly empty spot in openstreetmap. streetnames and points of interest are still missing.
• emmanuel from kiwix / wikimedia.ch helped scripting the infrastructure.

there are ongoing discusisons on how to fill in the gaps in the map. the current favourite is to use printouts e.g. created with the help of walkingpapers, and ask people to fill them in. the filled in printouts then are digitized and integrated into openstreetmap.
